BIO

The artist states that these paintings are part of a larger body of work that explores the experience of travelling across America on a Grey Hound Bus searching out the ultimate urban and natural landscape. Although his paintings have an English sensibility he feels a particular sympathy with the Bay Area Figurative Painters whose work applied painterly abstraction to figurative subject matter.

The title of the project refers to the long running British Radio 4 program ‘Letter from America ’ where the presenter Alistair Cooke, an English journalist living in New York recorded his reflections on American daily life. Preece sees his own paintings and prints like postcards that could be sent back to the UK that might say something about his experience in the USA from an English perspective.

Born in 1970. Studied at Chelsea School of Art 1988–89 and the Slade School of Fine Art 1989-93. Given a Boise Scholarship to travel and make work in the USA in 1995 – 96. Work has been included in exhibitions with Angela Flowers ‘Small is Beautiful’ in 2006 and 2008. John Martin ‘Altitude’ at Ashurst in 2006, Sarah Myerscough, ‘Subjective’ in 2005 and Five New Artists at Purdy Hicks in 2002. He recently had a one-man show at Gillions Art in London .

Commissions have been undertaken for amongst others, the Canary Wharf Group, Bayer plc and the Topland Group. His work is in both private and public collections including University College London, Bayer plc, Unilever plc and the Canary Wharf Group.
